![]() ![]() On Eagle's Wings The Pathlessâ island encourages natural exploration, so youâll want to be as mobile as possible. Itâs enthralling to chain together marker hits, all without worrying about precise aiming, so that you can run, jump, and glide with both style and precision. And without needing to really worry about aiming - if your generously zoomed out camera spots a marker, it will automatically be highlighted - that lets you put all your focus on the Hunterâs path. In the closest approximation to playing as The Flash in a video game, The Hunterâs dash offers a sense of graceful, smooth movement Iâve rarely seen, letting you cover vast distances in short order. The Hunterâs base walking speed is relatively slow, so youâre going to want to shoot down any of the plentiful markers regardless, but even without the need for speed, Giant Squidâs sense of movement could make for something really special. If you release at the halfway point, you actually get more bang for your bow. Timing is the main concern - you can see a meter fill up around the marker as you hold the right trigger down to shoot. Rather than aiming itâs all about timing - hit a marker as youâre running to continue your boost, then jump, shoot another marker, and use the momentum from that shot to glide further than if you had just initiated it from standing still. You can drain this meter to launch yourself into a smooth, speedy sprint, shooting down other markers as you go to keep your bar from totally depleting and, more importantly, keep your momentum up. Hit them and your boost meter â present at the bottom of the screen â will start to fill up. ![]() And sure, you could plod along at your basic running speed, but all throughout the island are these red, diamond-shaped markers floating in the air. It?s one of those games where the journey matters at least as much as, if not more than, the destination - and, thankfully, it makes that journey as smooth and seamless and pleasant as possible.Īnnapurna Interactive provided us with a Pathless PS5 code for review purposes.May Your Aim Be TrueTaking on the role of the Hunter, players navigate The Pathlessâ open-world on foot, or by gliding through the air with a newly met eagle companion. It?s the wandering around that makes The Pathless so compelling, though. Those are challenging enough to keep you exploring, and they give the game a shape instead of leaving you to simply wander around hoping you find something. You can add a filter to your vision that allows you to see giant flaming beacons, which generally guide you towards either environmental puzzles or boss fights - though ?fight? may be a misnomer, since a better descriptor would be boss stealth sections, where you have to sneak past monsters to rescue your eagle companion. Mind you, the game does nudge you in some directions here and there. There?s no map to follow, and while there are some indoor sections, for the most part you?re set down in a big world and it?s up to you to figure out where you want to go. Of course, it?s also easy to get lost because, as The Pathless? name implies, it doesn?t give you much in the way of direction. It all feels incredibly smooth, and it?s easy to get lost in simply exploring this wide open world. The former helps you launch yourself into the air every time you hit any of the many floating targets scattered throughout the game, while the latter helps you glide and soar up to higher areas. You control an archer with an eagle companion, and even though you start off on foot, as you progress through the game you soon learn that the best way to move around is to take advantage of both your bow and arrow and your eagle. In other words, The Pathless is the latest in a line of games from a developer who knows how to make characters move in the most fluid, balletic way imaginable.Īnd you see that throughout this game. Giant Squid?s last game was Abz?, and thatgamecompany is most famous for games like Journey and Flower. After all, it was developed by Giant Squid, who were founded by a few people who used to work at thatgamecompany. It should come as no surprise that the best thing about The Pathless is how your character moves.
